Raw 162: Bulpitt & Sons, Birmingham Marine Lamp 1912
Raw 162: Bulpitt & Son, Birmingham Marine Lamp 1912
When we found this nautical lantern it was in need of some restoration, but we knew it would transform into a special lamp and was well worth the work. Made by Bulpitt & Sons, Birmingham, in 1912, this solid brass lantern is heavy and has many interesting original features including: a brass oil burner (now converted to hold the lamp/bulb holder) wooden & brass lifting handle, opening door, 3 glass panels plus makers stamp and date.
Interestingly, the company was founded in 1868 as brass founders, later specialising in lamps and kettles using the renowned Swan trademark.
The lamp has been converted from oil to electric using solid brass fittings, around 2 metres of retro-style twisted mid-brown fabric cable and a black plug. It's in great condition with only limited signs of wear considering its age and purpose.
Dimensions height 40cm x width 21cm x depth 14cm
The Raw Collection captures an elemental grandeur for interiors wherein the essence of beautiful materials is celebrated in the raw. The main inspiration for this stylish contemporary collection is the four natural elements: fire, air, earth and water. Through harnessing the juxtaposed energies of: metal, wood and stone a natural dynamic in design evolves.
Utopia's Unexpected Lights
All Utopia's lights are unique and are handmade in our studios in North Norfolk from interesting antiques and finds. They each tell a narrative and enjoy close inspection to reveal strong craftsmanship and hidden layers of interest and wonder.
Creating our distinctive lights – the narrative behind the story
Reclaimed elegance – the artefacts that Utopia sources for its lights are deliciously old, usually antique, sometimes vintage, and this ‘narrative’ is reflected in their character, patina and form – Utopia celebrates the knocks, chips, and scratches of their stories. The inspired selection of the original object and the process it goes through to make it covetable and unique is what makes our products special – every lamp is a one-off.
Peace of Mind
Enjoy the aesthetics of top quality heritage styling: traditional twisted fabric cable, aged metal fittings, retro-style chains and historical Bakelite plugs, whilst having the peace of mind that your light is safe, having been completely wired/rewired by experts using modern fittings.
Please note that due to the large size and heavy weight of this lamp it can only be collected from our gallery in North Norfolk.
